my band.... is what pisses me off. they ****ing tell me i ain't very good and that i shouldn't even be called a bassist. well **** them. i DON'T follow guitar yet they say i do (deaf *Gosh Darnit*), i DO make up cool bass lines, just they never wanna hear em and don't give a toss.
i just ****ing hate the ****s. but worst thing is what can you do? to be fair we got the only decent guitarist and they like the music i like. i'd have no where else to go. so i just have to put up with the insults (even tho i don't insult them).
and they wanna merge with some other band leaving me and the drummer out. ****ing pissed ****ing off!

Hi Gazz,
When I was younger I had problems connecting with players. I gradually learned to never be in a place that wasn't supportive of my growth. An obvious lesson, but one we all learn at one time or another.
When you take responsibility for where you are, and have the courage to stretch into new ground and players, then I think you'll find things open up for you. I know they did for me.

I was a guitarist in my first "real" band, I mean a band that actually recorded and played gigs. I admit the other guys in the band were more advanced than me, but I learned fast and had a good feel, and a good attitude. But I put up with insults and **** too, for a couple of years. Eventually the band dissolved. When I look back on it I'm glad I hung in there, it taught me a lot, and when I was finally free of the "pros" in that band my playing improved 200%. There will always be other bands, look for people you can have FUN with, the rest will take care of itself.
Constructive criticism is good but a-holes are a-holes so you have to decide for yourself. good luck!

Well Im only 14 (my name) and Im in a pretty good garage band. Of course we don't play gigs... but we're looking forward to it. I wonder why they don't respect me though. Im the singer and the bassist. That's pretty *Holy Censor, Batman* hard. I mess up once in a while but... I dunno.

hi
a tricky one here
you said your bass lines are good, thats a good thing! (doh) maybe a band which would aprecitate you more would be best.
but then again being in a band is better than not, you learn alot from a band.
its up to you |

| You gotta play with people you respect and they must respect you, also. Find someone who enjoys the same music you do. I spent fifteen years playing crap that I didn't like. Now I play in bands that play music that I am interested in. Be patient and remember, you're improving as a bass player when you play with others. But, shouldn't it be fun? You will probably have to assemble the band yourself. It takes work and persistence. Good Luck! |

Just hang in there, you will never stop learning & neither will they.
(i.e. are they helping/sharing with harmonies or back-up?)
You have plenty to be confident of!
The show is not "all" down to you!
So just keep practicing, (by yourself if you have to,) it all adds up!
Show "due" respect - be humble - work hard - have fun!
But always be confident that tommorrow you will be a better player than today!
One day you will be in a similar position,
with newbie players who seemingly can't cut it.
Remember this lesson then, "show tolerance", "be helpful"...
Bands will come & go as you progress too... don't sweat it!
And you'll be a better bassist & band-member for it.

| Gazz: Here's how to blow your band's collective mind. Rehearse with your drummer, just the two of you. Record your parts, even if just with a boom box, and learn whether you are playing as a rhythm section, or playing "past" each other. Sit down together and listen to a simple, but great rhythm track, like "Spooky." Notice the bass and bass drum don't always strike at the same time, but the effect is awesome. You are the bridge between the drums and the rest of the band. Make your parts consistent, one good fill in the right spot makes people say "Whoa, hear that?" but 10 fills makes them yawn every time. Do it right, and they'll beg you to stay...if they don't see the light, someone will... |
