hi.
just thought i'd tell you a little story.
I'm left handed too and i got taught to play the drums open handed so it was very hard for me.
anyway i play bass right handed....

ibanezs are nice bass, not too expensive
i'd seen some nice deans around
esp's arent too bad for the money
depends how much u got how much you want to get out of bass
if you saved for a bit you could get a really nice sounding bass and get some kicks out the tone as well as the playing

Hi, just joined, I learned guitar/bass a while ago, but was forced? influenced to play right-handed but I'm a natural leftie...
I gave that away after trying for quite a while and am now starting all over again left-handed.
I worked in the industy for quite a while in other areas, so sorta know what I would like to buy     but can't afford to be that extravagant or super-quality oriented.
I have been away from the scene for a while, and would appreciate some tips about what to look for or recommendations for a good beginners bass, not rock bottom price but also one that won't break the bank, and may end up worth keeping.
thank you.

thanx, I have been saving for a while.
I was wondering if it is possible to build a nice guitar from quality hardware on a quality body & neck, like starting as a beginner sorta... an older... (erhem) beginner who saw most of the brands I'd like to own, but also some really nice customs, which even when using good or the best custom hardware, active eq and all, were still a reasonable price.
Are quality beginner "platforms" (neck/body) like that still available?
Brand names don't matter that much to me anymore, but quality does!
Just a thought...

Hi,
after seeing how very active this forum really is...
I decided to use the nick that my friends used to call me before,
(mainly cos I'm such a big super heavy fella - "NOT")
and also it fits the bass-guitar rather well, if I do say so meself~!   :-)
So it's not ronE anymore... he's gone...

Now back on topic...

Nah... aint any of the experts here readin' these forums or somethin'?
I know a little about good quality guitars and I'm not talkin' about building my own from scratch with old necks from Squires or even good necks from Precisions or whatever...

I was wanting to know if there are any good basic platforms {neck/body}(probably custom)
that I can add stuff like EMG's and better hardware, so it gradually improves as I do.
But good enough quality to start with so I can play all these tricks with it,
knowing that the chassis is top quality to start with.

Gees, here I am champin' at the bit, haven't bought me axe yet, doin' what I thought was the sensible thing, and lookin' for a bit of advice from an old timer or whatever...

Come-on you bassists... I'm goin' outta my mind!
Be a good dog an' help the blind...

please...

Wonderful news!

All those years... it just transferred straight over - even better! - I can't put it down!
It seems because my brain already knows the tones & neck and ... Wow!

I told ya's I got an Ibanez too huh?
Suddenly all those beats that were comin' out wrong are all tumbling out straight!
Just gotta watch the raw fingers eh?
But even that is not a problem?
I seem to instinctively have transferred the correct "touch"?
Something's gotta go wrong here somewhere?
I'll keep in touch...
Oooooo boy, yippeee aaaah .... yippee!

p.s.
Anyone know if "Laney" amps are any good?
Got my eye on another pawn-shop special :-)

Yo FatE! Welcome to the board, by the way.

Note that this is just one old guys opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

Sounds to me like you want to check out USA Custom or Warmoth and specify what you want. IMO, a 4 string is still the most useful axe to have, but you may want a 5 string.

Choice of woods is a very subjective thing, but I like Swamp Ash for the body, maple for the neck and rosewood or ebony for the fretboard.

Choose the wood for the body, neck and fretboard that you want, finish it in your fav color, or at least seal it. Buy Hipshot or Schaller tuners, and a hipshot bridge, Seymour Duncan or whatever pickups you like, get an Aguilar or EMG active preamps and controls, and put it all together.

Then, take it to a good tech to have it setup properly and you are in business.

Laney has made some great amps through the years, and some that wern't so great. The tube amps in particular were real nice.

Another option for a bass is to buy a Carvin, and specify exactly how you want it. They really are good basses. I prefer a bolt-on neck to a through body neck, but that's just me. They do sound different.

The Fernandes Basses are pretty good for the bucks, but you really need to play it first to make sure you like the feel of the neck. So are the Fender Basses. Especially the new American Jazz, and the Deluxe Precision.

Some folks will steer you toward the other japanese basses, Yamaha, Ibanez, etc, but I personally don't care for them. Just me, again.

Fenders made in Mexico are pretty good quality, except for the hardware generally. The body's and neck's however are pretty nice. You can build on that.

Thanx... I'm in Aus. so not possible.
also,
I got myself an oldish?..Ibanez Roadstar II
which I am having trouble putting down...
but that has more to do with a sorta starvation and exuberance, than what I'm playin'?
