the chrome pickup covers that used to be installed on vintage Fenders? You know... the "ashtrays".

the handrest? that you rest your hand on? that your hand uses when it wants to rest ? that begs your hand,"Rest on me, for without hands, I would have no purpose!" Laughing sorry, feelin like a smart *Horse's Patoot*...I personally like the built in ashtrays on the old P`s... you know, the ones that look like bridge covers... Very Happy

I don't think they were designed to be used as handrests (unless I'm just misinformed). I assumed they're there for tonal reasons because in my eyes, they wouldn't be comfortable as handrests at all. Does anyone have much experience with them? I like vintage basses, but I could never understand why people prefer the ashtrays over the sans-ashtrays models.

I just confirmed that they were only for looks and not intended to be used as handrests. I was right. What are you thinking?

I think they look good when they are on. MY buddy told me back in the 60s when he got an esquire with a cover on it. He hated it so much that he took it off and made it his permanent on stage ash tray. He said a lot of people did that back then. He still has the cover and he still uses it for an ash tray.
