Everywhere you turn, people play Ampeg SVTs. What's the appeal? They're unbelievably popular, but I've never had much experience with them.

I think the SVT-Pro series is great. I own and SVT-3Pro, and have tried the SVT-4Pro and 5Pro all with equally great quality (although the 4Pro tends to be more equal than the others, George Orwell fans, anyone?). I've heard a lot of negative response to the SVT Classic Series heads, but you can talk to supermau about that. He owned one.

There was nothing negative about the two classic SVT tubehead rigs I owned in the 70s, and they sounded great with the 810 cabs I used with them.
Believe me, 300 watts of all tube power and 8 - 16 - 10" speakers moving air, makes an awesome bass rig!

It's hard to believe that Ampeg would have many negative reviews of any of their bass amps, since they've been making great bass amplifiers for several decades.

original svt tuber`s are the ultimate bass heads IMHO...Nothing else can make a Gibson EB-0 or 3 growl like they do and push as much power... pure tube nastieness... Twisted Evil

Ampeg has been in the bass amp biz for a long, long time. The company was an innovator in bass amp technology back in the day and a lot of early rock bands caught on. I think that's a big part of the appeal. Kind of like how the Fender Strat and P bass became such icons of rock and roll. That, and the fact that Ampeg is high quality *Condensed Food Loaf*. There's a lot more competition now but Ampeg is still a big dog.

I own and LOVE my SVT Classic head and matching 4ohm box and to my knowledge haven't heard of any negativity towards them. There really is NO comparable rig on the market that offers you the COMPLETE package of raw thunder and crystalline clarity. Used, of course, with a decent bass. I have a couple of cheaper bass that I thought I would try to soup-up, so to speak, but you can't sugar coat a sour pill and a good amp will only define the inadequacies of a bad bass rather than make a bad bass sound good. In my opinion there are a hell of a lot of really good and even great bass amps on the market these days but if your back and wallet can handle it rest assured you will never regret buying an all tube SVT.

Something about the SVT Classic and an 810E combination that puts the bass with the band. It makes your bass come alive. There's that TUBE Presence that few amps can come too. a good 90% of the amps can not get as loud as the SVT. The SVT makes Playing bass a lot more fun. 300 watts of tube wins ANY volume war! You can beat a double bass drummer, Two guitarists with 100 watts tube heads, a crazy singer and whatever else all at the same time! If you play Rock, Rap, Country, and/or need something with some booty to it, get an SVT. If you play slap, I suggest an EDEN head.

The best Ampeg amp that I have ever seen and heard run through an 8x10 is an Ampeg SVT-AV. Those amps are beasts.

The SVT Classic with the 8X10 is the absolute best rig for rock and roll. I don't know what it is, but that sound is very distinct. It's raw.... I do love the sound of some of the other David Eden or SWR rigs, but they are just too pristine for my taste. There's just something nasty about the tube Classics. Plus, it just makes you feel like a man with that Ampeg 8X10 and Classic head behind you on stage.
