I never intentionally stretch and cut strings. However, when I replace a set I keep the old ones as these will do in a pinch and usually fit in quite well with the rest of the set if you have to replace just one in a hurry.
Replacing just one is never ideal and the sound will always suffer slightly, but in gig situations chances are you'll be the only one who notices - the general listening public just aren't as tone sensitive as Bassophiles. If you are consistent with your brand this will obviously help.
So the answer? Keep your old strings (maybe boil 'em depending on the interval you leave between new sets) to hand.
