| Quote: | This is only a temporary fix though.
Bass players used to do it in the 80's (well me and most of the London circuit) to keep the strings bright for slap bass.
They do weaken and will snap (usually right in the middle of your solo!)

Quoting myself.........
Just had a thought when answering that question.
Something most of us bass players find out too late.
Have some pre-cut strings in your 'bag of tricks'....
It saves a lot of time and embarrasment if you snap one at a gig.

Precut? What do you mean? (Does that question sound stupid? I understand the words, but I want to make sure that I have the right picture in my head.)

I put spare sets on the bass & stretch em & trim em, then put em in yer case or gig bag or pocket or keister or wherever-- that way you dont have to hold up a show when ya pop a string on stage & you need em...quick... _________________ --==Warum tut es weh, wenn ich pinkele?==-- |

How often do you snap bass strings?
In 11 years of playing I've only ever snapped a string once, that was in the early days when I really was hammering the bass! |

| I personally have never broken a bass string, even with intense slap/pop playing, but I change my strings every 4 months anyway. |

i have broken one and they were old strings that came on the bass (crap) and it hit me in the arm and i still have a little bit of a mark.
- i do precut my strings and put them in my gigbag because i dont carry dykes (wonder if it will censor that lol) that way if i pop a string at a practice or a gig whatever it may be i can replace it but like i said i have never broke one other than that once and i was practicing alone so there was no time problem. _________________ GreyFox

| I keep a backup bass on hand instead of precut strings. I'm sure most every gigging player does this. In the four years I've been playing bass I've only popped a string twice that I can remember. I've blown many a guitar string however, especially since I took up bass. I play guitar harder now because of my bass playing. |

I dont use a backup for each bass, but I do take my EB-0, EB-3 & a p-bass for certain songs, depending on style...SIT pressurewounds on the EB-0, flats on the EB-3 & usually GHS boomers on the P...though I am experimenting with Ernie Balls.... _________________ --==Warum tut es weh, wenn ich pinkele?==-- |

Think Gibson Thunder answered it!
I just mean having your spare strings cut to size ready to pop on your bass. Then just put them back in the string box!
It can save you precious seconds at a gig and you don't get so stressed,
especially if you have forgotten your cutters!

| Sounds like a good idea. If I toured more maybe I'd try that. I can't say I've ever been in a situation where I really needed to get my string fixed that fast though. |

I have found that in recent months, I have been breaking a lot of A strings. I think it may have something to do with my bass, though. Pre-cutting strings seems like a strange pass-time to me, but I have had to do it in recent times because of this *Holy Censor, Batman* A string issue! I don't like the idea of putting a weaker string on from the outset, especially when I'm paying $95 - $120 (Australian) for them! I don't think you can argue the point that the strings are weaker after they are cut, and the brand I normally use come in some new space age non-oxidising, zero tarnish packaging. Pre-cutting is something I don't intend to do for long! _________________ Alright!

Dean Markley "Blue Steel" 45 - 100 or 40 - 95. I like a lighter gauge, though I pay for it in breakages!!! _________________ Alright!
