| Yeah, boiling strings sounds like a complete waste of time to me. New strings only cost twenty bucks and I'm sure they sound better than something that's been on your bass for five months. It sounds to me like one of those "home remedies" that somebody thought up just to see if it works but isn't necessarily more practical or better. |

BassDogs....it's not an old wive's tale.
Boil the strings for a couple of minutes only.
You can see the sweat and grease floating in the water (Eeeu!)
This is only a temporary fix though.
Bass players used to do it in the 80's (well me and most of the London circuit) to keep the strings bright for slap bass.
They do weaken and will snap (usually right in the middle of your solo!)
Maybe only good for three or four boils (if you are lucky).
Try it with some old strings! _________________ Find a good bass and commit.

Yeah, I remember my jobless days, Rufio. Now, I have a job, but still not enough money because expenses have dramatically risen--I'm starting college at University of Wisconsin-Madison at the end of the month. I'm looking at a several thousand dollar loan just for this year. I have a feeling that I will soon find out the true meaning of not having enough money, though I'm not selling my instruments because it wouldn't make a big dent in the overall amount that I will have to pay...maybe I'll just eat less and wear my clothes twice before washing them. We'll see. _________________ Don't try to stop me!!! |

Have fun at the UW Tweety, it's a great school and actually a great bargin. I'm an alum(2000) now living in Miami Beach(got sick of the cold WI winters!)...
I've only had my bass for 3 months, so I'll hold off on the boiling for now...although I do sweat alot! |
