does this only work for bass strings? or is it cool for guitar strings too?

I don't see why not. It'll clean them off good, but, won't bring totally dead ones back to life, since the metal just gets fatigued after a while. I'm sure some good chemical cleaning would have a similar effect to boiling, as long as it dosen't leave any residue, and you do it with the strings dismounted.

Yeah, no chems on the bass/guitar, that's just not cool! But like someone already said, guitar strings are like 5 bucks. Unless you're a starving college student or just piss poor, it's not worth the effort for guitar.

Good point, I always forget how cheap guitar strings are.

This one stuff from tech spray I used one time, the industrial contact cleaner... I'll bet that'd work great. But again, AWAY from the instrument! I was dusting with it (bad idea) since we had an old can around... apart from sending me into a coughing fit, it actually took the letters of the california car duster's handle Shocked ... As soon as I noticed that... I put it away.

Yeah, that makes sense, its a halfway decent grease cutter, but... then your hands might smell like WD40 #Silly

another testimonial of how great it is to boil strings. they sound brand new. before boiling them, they had no bite but they are bright as hell now!
recipe:
set pot of water to rolling boil
wrap strings in a circle
stir in strings
boil for 30mins stirring occassionally
dry strings thoroughly
string up and rock out!

Gah, I had a problem boiling. They sounded bright at first (new string sound), but then went REALLY limp after two weeks of playing. Not dull like normal, I mean they were unplayable. I'm well stocked on strings, (found Epiphone strings for 7.50 USD) so I'm not going to bother anymore!

Sam Goody (sp) in the mall. An overpriced cd store. They had this great idea of selling guitar supplies!! <----(sarcasm). Needless to say, it doesn't look like it's paying off, they clearanced all their 5-string bass strings out at 1/2 price. I don't play five string, but the other four strings are the perfect size, I'm happy.

Recently, guitar shops are stocking no-name bass strings for $10 a set. If you don't mind not using boomers, EBs, or Fenders, it's a cheaper alternative Very Happy.

What if you boil them with some soap or something, wouldn't that help dissolve grease? Or would it just bubble like crazy...

Yeah, my last set I pulled off were also worn flat where they touched the frets, definately not worth boiling again!
