hey guys, i was wondering what a good string guage is to be playing. right now since i decided to do the first string change on my new fender p-bass deluxe (4 string), i went for GHS heavies (bottum string is .115 guage). i don't really know what the guage of the fender strings that i had were. anyways, with the heavy guage i can play pretty decently, but i also need speed (which i lack a little bit with these) when i work with my instructor, so i'm debating on getting ernieball powers (.110 guage) or some .105 string. anyone know anything, let me know. thanx

on my Gibson I have some DR sunbeams which are pretty light... the Gibson has a beautiful raunchy, punchy sound to it that kicks so much *Horse's Patoot*. Anyways, I mostly use my 5 string Yamaha that I recently got a new nut for and some GHS Boomers Medium Light.... I now use the Yamaha %100 of the time cuz' the electronics on it are badass... I can do anything on it.

Medium Lights seem to be my fav string so far

I play Carvin's medium-heavy wires on my 5-strings. .045 - .065 - .085 - .105 - .128.

I usually use heavy flats on the EB-0 & light super slinkys on the p-bass, however, I just tried a set of medium-heavy pressurewound SIT`s on the EB & I really dig em...

Different for different basses

1. Dolphin (usually 40-125 0r 130). Lighter if gig requires!
2. Thumb (fretless 30-120)
3. Ovation (Acoustic 40-125). Green fingers after gig (bronze strings)

Really light... I'm one of those bass players who tends to play a lot of ostinatos up high and fast, and when I'm not doing that kind of thing, I like to slap a lot... a real lot.
I find the really light strings have, obviously, more speed to do this kind of thing with, and what they lack in depth can usually be compensated by EQ. I am having trouble, though, getting an ultra light string for a six string bass. Does anyone have any suggestions???

I don't think that would work... Would they be able to hold up on a bass? I guess it's worth a shot as long as you don't bust your bass up. 'Cept I don't think he wants that light, does he?

Oh yeah, I didn't even think of that. It'd be a pretty big stretch!

Have you thought of piano strings? From the story I heard, the first Rotosound roundwound strings (played by John Entwhistle), were actually piano strings that he put on his bass. The rest is history. They are long and come in many gauges.

Yea, I'd imagine that would work pretty good. They have a string for each note even the flats and sharps, so you could definately find one of a good gauge. You'd have to get a right sized piano though, because I'd imagine that some piano strings would be shorter than others...
