if it's /9 it means slide up if it's \9 it's slide down from wherever like 12\9 would be sliding from 12 to 9. Not really sure about r, maybe let it ring?

The 'slide up' thing still confuses me like if a tab were like:

Where do you slide up from?

If it doesn't have any number on it you do it from zero. Or one, cause you can't really start on zero.

yup yup hit the nail on the head. and if the slash was the other way you would just start from the "bottom of your fretboard" (your highest fret)
