ok
well go to a shop fine all the ones which are in budget then play them all
make sure they go through a nice amp in the shop not a guitar amp or they will all sound horrible
see which ones has the right feel for you
my first bass was a squire which was good at the mine but when you start getting good, inb a band, caring about your tone more then a new one will probably be needed (i got an ibanez)
good luck and hope u enjoy the bass, its very fun

As far as equipment you can find some great deals at Musicians Friend http://www.musiciansfriend.com
Click on the bass guitar link, and then search for bass packages. Alot of them have all the things you need to get started. (Pick, strap, amp, bass, ect...) and all for a reasonable price.
I have some free bass lessons at my site that may help you, but you may also want to check CyberfretBass http://www.cyberfretbass.com/
I hope this helps some.
