For $1000 you could get a heck of a nice combo and a decent bass.

I am 12 Very Happy . 20 a week for mowin the lawn. 5 a week for allowance. Saved up birthday money. It adds up if you don't spend much. Plus I have my birthday Monday where I'll get even more from my parents. Then sometime in August I have a birthday party with my BIG extended family where I'll probably get at least 100 more Cool But if I'm gunna end up paying 600 or 700 dollars on an RD Artist I won't have too much more for an amp.

Don't take this personally, but I think your too young to be investing that enormous amount of money in a guitar. What are you playing on now? And what amp do you have?

You may hate the RD if you get one. I don't know. I've heard mixed things about the Moog electronics. That's old stuff. Since mine is passive I don't have to deal with all that.

Cool as they are to look at I would also recommend that you go with a comfortable Fender or similar brand.

On the upside. If you did buy an RD and didn't like it, you'd get your money back. Assuming of course you didn't pay a fortune for it.

Basses like the RD are a bit of an aquired taste. I had it for 6 months as a backup, never used it. Until one day I plugged in and realized it was better than my Fender P. Better meaning it sounded better, better intonation, and way cooler looking. So now my Fender usually sits in backup mode.

But as a first or second bass for a beginner I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. It's much harder to play than a Fender neck. It's no where near as comfortable. I don't know what your body size is but the RD is a BigA$$ guitar.

Still, on the other hand, if you want one that bad then go for it. Who am I to tell you what's up for Christ sake?!!

my suggestion would be to go out and get yourself a better amp. Maybe like a 12" combo or something. Spend like 300 bucks on it, set yourself on a low limit. Wait until your really working before you get yourself a 500-1000 dollar bass, because trust me, that 1000 dollars you have may be burning a big hole in your pocket, and you may want to spend it all, but at age 13 you really have no idea what you want yet (i know i probably sound like your parents, but theres a reason why we can say this, because we were there already!). In a year if you still have your heart set on getting a more expensive bass, then get one, but for now, you really don't need one. There's plenty of time to waste your money on stuff. But be patient.... that's just my two cents, which is really worth that much.

Well I wouldn't get a bass that I haven't played yet and that I haven't done research on. I'm just sayin that if I play a bass and I really like it, I'd love to have it. And for the amp thing, I'd rather buy a real nice amp a little later and save spending 300 dollars. But I have to admit that you're right. I do need to wait until I get more serious about playing bass and start doin gigs.

I hate to tell people how to spend their money.... I don't want to get involved in this conversation TOO much because I myself don't have the ideal setup I want. I don't have the ideal job, either.

My $.02 - You're too young to worry about that much money. Your priorities could change in a year or two. Your parents are exactly right to encourage you not to blow a grand. When I was twelve, a grand was a fortune. It's still a fortune and I'm in college. (Being in college will teach you how to make the most of stuff, I guarentee)

Look at it this way.... when you're 16, you're going to want a car. My first car literally cost me one thousand dollars. I ran the sucker for two years before it crapped out on me. It was the best thousand I ever spent. You'll understand what I'm talking about when you start dating. Wink

My solution for your bass situation - slum it. You're only twleve, for crying out loud, there's no reason to worry about having the finest equipment. I'm in college and I still borrow gear from my friends.

- Make friends who play and bum stuff off them. There's no shame in it.... they borrow my stuff, I borrow theirs. Muscians are usually really close, so I doubt your bros would mind if you played their gear at practice.

- Modify the gear you do have. If you're unsatisfied with tone... get new pups! They cost a LOT less than a new axe and you would be SHOCKED as to the difference they make.

- Practice more! Your parents are more likely to help if they see you give a crap. If you're improving, they'll WANT to help you.

- Don't worry about amps too much until you're older. You're goofing around in your room... not headlining at the Garden.

Just a few thoughts.

Hey Rufio, forget what I said, Beo is a hell of a lot on the mark. Hey beo, for not wanting to get too involved you sure solved the issue pretty darn well.

Ya know what? Beo`s got some good advice, there...But on the other hand, If youre serious about playing & starting to get good & find a bass you really dig, a nice bass does alot to furthur your playing- I had an affinity p-bass,too & the difference is very apperant when you switch to a more quality axe- so definatly put some hard thought into what you get & if you wanna drop heavy bread on a rig, go for it! $.02
