I played a friends' once. Nice basses. Not my cup of tea however. But high quality for sure.

My daughter and I bought a Lakland 55-01 with a silver metalflake finish and a 35" scale neck with a rosewood fretboard for her boyfriend last christmas.
I think it's great bass, with active EQ, and bartolini soapbar pickups on it.
You can bypass the active EQ by pulling up on the volume knob for passive use.
It has a nice tight low B string on it and the bass has great punch and sustain.
I played about every bass in the local guitar shop before I chose it over all of the other basses in that price range for tone, playability, etc., and it looked sharp, and was well balanced to boot.
It was the best bass out of all the store had for under $1000 to me.
The daughters boyfriend is extremely happy with it, and he plays mostly punk, and some nu-metal in a local band.
I think Lakland's 55-01's are hard to beat for $700 myself, but to each their own you know, just an opinion.

Well I haven't been able to find them anywhere around my town. I guess I'll have to search a little harder!

They're not super common.... I've never played one myself. I heard they're kind of expensive, but they have more reasonably priced models now that they've beome popular. Their website probably has a way to find Lakland dealers..... unless they're made-to-buy like Carvin.
